Flip Prior A new eyebrow shaping craze is sweeping Perth – well, sort of new, because the technique is actually more than 6000 years old. Most women are familiar with the agony of braving tweezers or hot wax in a bid to create perfect eyebrows. But armed only with a spool of white cotton thread and centuries of tradition, Indian-born Rizwan Syed and his French wife Sandrine, or “Zubia”, are achieving arguably better – and painless – results. Their business, Zubias Threading, has grown rapidly from one salon to six across Perth in two years, fuelled by word-of-mouth advertising. They plan to franchise their brand, in response to a flood of interest. The method is simple – a length of thread is twisted several times and rolled over the skin. Caught by roots, hairs lift from their follicles, whole rows at a time. It sounds like Velcro ripping off the skin, but 10 minutes after treatment, a pinkish glow around the eyebrows fades to normal, with none of the telltale redness or swelling which follows waxing. Threading might be new to WA but it has long been popular in America and Europe. In India and the Middle East, it has been used for hair removal for centuries. Mrs Syed said it took her years to master threading, which she learnt from Middle Eastern friends. The West Australian, 15th March, 2010 Arch nemesis Those who can raise one eyebrow at a time are open to countless more facial expressions over us mere mortals with left brows that mimic every moment of the right. If you don't have the talent, make sure you look good! Threading is the latest hair removal technique that has made it to Perth (after thousands of years in India) at Zubias Threading. Zubia Syed and her husband Rizwan have recently opened a salon in the Southlands Boulevard in Willetton. Threading uses a pure cotton thread that a twisted and skilfully manipulated to gently lift the hair off the follicle. The pain is far less than waxing and provides a more accurate shape. Unlike waxing, where you often find Houdini hair that dodge elimination, not a stray hair remains and you are left with a perfectly shaped brow. We're sold at Scoop and will be making regular visits to Zubia and Rizwan's weekend stall at the E-shed Markets in Fremantle.
